Adventures in Sydney Aquarium Wonderland Part I

I'm entertaining my friend Cat from the USA who I've known for over 15 years but only met in person less than a week ago. She used to work as a Marketing Manager for Warp Graphics who published WaveDancers back in the mid 90s. Jozef, Bruce (ex-BMP partner and co-writer) and I hit it off with her then and we've kept in touch through triumph and tragedy and become FaceBook buddies. She's only got nine days here and yesterday we devoted an afternoon to the Sydney Aquarium.

I hadn't been for a long time so I was surprised at how deceptive it was in size. The entry looks quite small but actually hides a labyrinth of rooms, alcoves, passageways, tunnels and both miniature and giant tanks. It actually took us four hours to make our way through from top to bottom and the only thing we missed through either a wrong turn or a miss was the glass bottom boat. Next time ...

However, we found the aquarium to be magical. There was smaller tanks for marine exhibits such as the moray eels which hid in a bundle of pipes and larger tanks for an abundance of tropical fish like the Barrier Reef exhibit that also held wonderful coral and anemone life. Some of my favourites included the moon jellyfish, upside down jellyfish (which looked like giant snowflakes if you looked at them from the top), the gropers and giant cods, the glorious weedy sea dragon and elegant seahorses, the wise and all knowing octopus who I could have stayed and watched for ages (as well as its relative the cuttlefish), the wobbegong sharks in the giant shark tank, and, of course, the wonderful dugongs, which we covered in a previous post. (Still can't believe it took me two years to get here!)

The entryway to the dugong tank was a ramp that led you through a lovely mermaid meets dugong mural (see attached images) and then into a large tank which you could view from the top and also from the bottom. Dugongs feed on sea grasses from the ocean floor which are difficult to harvest and also disturb the environment. The nearest equivalent and yummiest plant life is the tried and true cos (romaine) lettuce. The leaves are threaded into square plates with grids in them and then lowered to the bottom. The dugongs swim down to feed, as well as multiple fish.

The dugongs were a delight – one male (Pig) and one female (Wuru). Their tails and fins were indeed mermaid-like and their gentle faces looked as though they were smiling. There was a lovely peaceful energy about them. Check out the pics in Part 2 of this post.

The whole experience made me want to get back into the water and start snorkelling and diving again (though I'd have to go back and do another scuba course from scratch because I've forgotten pretty much everything).

Here's more info about the Sydney Aquarium, and if you want to adopt an ocean creature then choose from the dugong, saltwater crocodile, marine turtle, clownfish (as in Finding Nemo), grey nurse shark, little / fairy penguin, the wonderful platypus, and white's seahorse.

Blessed are Australian waters indeed!

Time Magazine Person of the Year – Harvey Pekar Obituary

The recent "Person of the Year" Time magazine issue (27 December 2010) counted Harvey Pekar, who died on 12 July 2010 aged 70, amongst its "Fond Farewells" List.
From the 1970s, Harvey Pekar was one of the giants of the comic-book medium. His revealing autobiographical stories, in the pages of his American Splendor series and in books like Our Cancer Year (a collaboration with his wife Joyce Brabner and artist Frank Stack), had a profound influence on a generation of American cartoonists.
The brilliant Paul Giamatti played him in the 2003 film – American Spendor. Here's the original July Time obituary by Joe Sacco. Can't remember the last time a comics creator was given such respect in a major magazine.

Here are two David Letterman interviews with Harvey Pekar that will give you a giggle.

Mermaid Books 3 – The Magical Mermaids

More mermaid Christmas presents to share with you all. This one was unexpected – a lovely little mermaid jigsaw puzzle book with a story in it taboot called The Magical Mermaids: A Sparkling Jigsaw Book by James Hogg (author) and Alison Atkins (illustrator). Every double page contains a one page, splash page (to borrow a comics term for a full page piece of artwork) puzzle. So just drop the pieces out and then reassemble. Great for kids and mermaid-loving adults such as myself. Too cute!

Elf~Fin Leaks & Peeks 20

Okay ... we were going to hold this back a little longer but some of our Elf~Fin FaceBook group members have been requesting more artwork so here 'tis. This is a variation on a cover that will be released soon. We know you're thinking ... what's going to be released? All we'll say for the moment is that it's a limited edition Elf~Fin: Hyfus & Tilaweed Preview. More information will be announced as we get closer to publication. We were aiming for November / December 2010 but Julie landed in hospital for a major operation and unfortunately we lost our momentum. We're looking at around early March now.

On another note, we're retaining our FB group for the moment but have plans to move across to a FB fan page. This may not happen overnight because we want to ensure that our Trade Mark registration is official in line with our fan page name otherwise we could be in breach of the law. At such time, we'll be asking members to migrate across.

Mermaid Treasures 16

I scored a lot of mermaid booty for Christmas and in this particular case – a belated birthday present (from August) – which I thought I might share with you. This was winter pyjama pants and a sleep-mask in a little bag made by "Annelise for Susans". I looked it up on the Internet to see if it was still available but couldn't find a reference. The material appears to be flannellette (I should check the label but don't want to go back into the house right now). I couldn't wait to sleep in the pants so tried them out about a week ago, but the night was so hot and humid I had to take them off before I cooked. However, the following two nights were so unseasonably cold that I put them back on again and slept under a doona (quilt) to keep warm and the PJs turned out to be perfect. I matched them with one of our Valentine Black Mermaid™ (Heart of my Heart) top. So there you have it ... I will endeavour to keep them for as long as I can.
